    The history of the Temecula wine tours and Temecula wineries spans back to the settlers of California. The first known settler to set foot in this area was a Franciscan padre, Father Juan Norberto de Santiago, who tracked into Temecula valley in October of 1797.

    The name Temecula originates from the Luiseño Indian word "Temecunga" - "temet" meaning "sun" and "-ngna" which means "place of". The Spanish interpreted the word as "Temecula". Over the years, the meaning of "Temecula" has been translated into several different versions of this interpretation, the most popular of which is, "Where the sun breaks through the mist". To this day, Temecula is the only city in California to still retain its original Indian name.
